Davis a ranking member of subcommittee

U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville) on Jan. 17 was named Ranking Member for the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit by Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Ranking Member by Sam Graves (R-Mo.).

Mudpuppy Festival is Feb. 2

The Second Annual Mudpuppy Festival is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 at Monarch Brewing Co., 212 S. Independence St., Monticello. The event celebrates one of the unique creatures of the Sangamon River.

MAEF 'Black Jack and Black Tie' fundraiser

Tickets are on sale for the Monticello Area Education Foundation (MAEF) 2019 fundraiser, “Black Jack and Black Tie – 21 Years of MAEF.” The event will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Allerton Mansion.

Bement High School taking hall of fame nominations

The Bement Board of Education began its annual Bement High School Hall of Fame Award in 1991, with the naming of Sereno Bodman and Gary Gallagher as it first members. Since its inception, fifty-five Bement High School graduates have been named to the Hall of Fame. Last year the Hall of Fame honorees were: Wilma Fendley and Dana Foran.

HCE plans Cultural Enrichment Day

The letters HCE stand for Home, Community an Education. The Piatt County HCE is starting the new year by inviting all to come on in and see what HCE is all about. Participants will enjoy the program and learn a bundle from the guest speaker.

Bement FCCLA service project

Bement High School’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America members made blankets and collected hats, gloves and mittens as a service project last month.

A majority will be donated to A Small Hand: Piatt County Infant and Diaper Pantry, with some remaining at the school for students in need.

Rose sworn into office

State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) was sworn into office Jan. 9 at the Statehouse during the Illinois Senate Inauguration.

Bell ringers raise dollars in Bement

Bell ringers on behalf of the Salvation Army were out in force during the Christmas season while stationed at Bement businesses in December. At the conclusion of the fund-raising drive, the Bement unit reported it had completed another outstanding Kettle Drive in the southern Piatt County community.

Ayers running for re-election to Parkland board

Four candidates will run for three Parkland College board of trustees seats up for election in April.

Students nominated to service academies

U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville) announced on Jan. 4 he has nominated 15 area students for admittance to the U.S. Service Academies. The nominations for these students were made following an application and interview process. Final determination on admission is made by the individual academies.
