Churches planning for possible shootings

After a gunman killed 26 people in November at a church in Texas and another killed 17 people last month at a high school in Florida, some businesses and organizations are taking steps they never would’ve thought they had to.

Music ministry program at Monticello Nazarene Church

Bob and Jennifer Wilkerson will be at the Monticello Nazarene Church at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18 for a music and ministry service. The church is located at 301 W. Wilson St., Monticello.

Bledsoe new pastor at Calvary Baptist Church

Joshua “Josh” Bledsoe admits God started calling him to the ministry at the age of 16, but “growing up I wanted to be a band director. I wanted to do that my entire life.”

So after graduating with his music education degree from Eastern Illinois University in 2003 he became the Vandalia High School band director. And he loved it.

Monticello church celebrating 175th anniversary

The congregation of Monticello’s oldest church is celebrating its 175th anniversary this month. The First Presbyterian Church, 214 S. Charter, will have a celebratory potluck dinner after the worship service on Sunday, Oct. 29.

With history in mind, church erects modern building

The membership of the Monticello United Methodist Church definitely had modernization in mind when they constructed their new church on the east side of Monticello, but they also made sure to remember the long history of their previous building.
