Shonkwiler memorial installed

Employees of Adams Memorial installed a commemorative marker in Monticello on Monday in honor of former Piatt County Judge John P. Shonkwiler.

At top, the 2,500-pound stone is lifted off the truck that transported it from Charleston to Monticello. At right, workers guide it into place on the northeast corner of the Piatt County Courthouse lawn.

Shonkwiler presided over cases in the Sixth Judicial Circuit in Monticello for 47 years, serving as chief judge of the circuit for 18 years until his death in 2012.

A committee formed in 2016 recommended a gazebo for the courthouse lawn, but could not raise the $20,000 needed to purchase the materials for it. The family of the late judge paid for the memorial that was installed this week.
