Cerro Gordo election board needs new member

The Village of Cerro Gordo’s election commission met again on Jan. 2, and a third session will be needed in the case of Village Board Member Tim Allen challenging the election petitions of board hopeful Tom Hyde.

Allen alleges Hyde’s petitions were not filed in accordance with state-mandated guidelines for the April 2 municipal election.

At issue last week was Village Clerk Tiny McCarty’s spot on the election commission. She has recused herself from that duty, saying she could be called as a witness at the hearing.

The 6th Judicial Circuit Court Judge will appoint the new election board member. As far as the adoption of the election commission rules, that will take place once a new member is appointed.

Village President Dennis Ridgeway stated, “this matter will be addressed when we have a full electoral board.”

Hyde is being represented by Foltz and Rupiper in Monticello. Tim Allen is representing himself.

The hearing will likely take place by the end of January.

“The most critical thing is that the hearing is fair,” said Village Attorney Susan Nicholas.
