UPDATE: Car stolen in Monticello

UPDATE: Piatt County Sheriff's officials have been notified by authorities in Lake County, Indiana that a Jeep stolen from Monticello Thursday was located at approximately 6 a.m. Friday near Dyer, Indiana. It had been struck by a two-mile long freight train, resulting in traffic being blocked at the train tracks of the unincorporated area of Lake County.

The driver of the Jeep has not been located.

"We do not have any further information on this, however, we remain in contact with authorities in Kansas and Indiana," said Piatt County Sheriff's Deputy Tom Apperson.

ABC-7 in Chicago reported the vehicle had been dragged about a quarter mile before ending up on its side in the grass along the railroad tracks.

One vehicle was stolen in Monticello Thursday and another car was left in its place.

Piatt County Sheriff's Police say a woman parked her white 2002 Jeep Wrangler at the Monticello Township Cemetery at about 10 a.m. and went for a walk. When she returned her two-door vehicle was gone and a silver 2010 Nissan Rogue left in its place.

Upon investigation, authorities learned the Nissan had been taken in Kansas on Aug. 7. In addition, an Illinois license plate was stolen in Southern Illinois had been attached to the stolen car.

The Wrangler, which has a tan-colored top, had an Illinois license plate of AA44394. Anyone who has information as to its whereabouts is encouraged to call the Piatt County Sheriff's office at 217-762-5761.
