DeLand-Weldon sets school dates for 2017-18

Calendar dates were the main item of discussion at the Jan. 23 DeLand-Weldon school board session. By the time the meeting adjourned, board members had approved the dates for the 2017-18 school year, changed three meeting dates, and established when commencements will take place this May.

The first day of class for students next school year will be Wednesday, Aug. 16. Teachers officially kick things off with two days of in-service training on Aug. 14-15. The school year will end on Monday, May 21 if no emergency days are used. That date could be extended if school days are canceled due to weather or other concerns.

The schedule is similar to this school year, when students reported on Aug. 17 and are scheduled to start their summer vacation after a 2:18 p.m. dismissal on Wednesday, May 24.

Board members also approved a date for high school graduation, which will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13 in the high school gymnasium. Junior high ceremonies will be at 7 p.m. May 24, also in the high school gym.

The next three school board meetings have been pushed back a day so that they would not be held on days when school is not in session. Meetings will now be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, Feb. 21, March 13 and April 18.

More on superintendent search this month
The board will likely meet with a representative of the Illinois Association of School Boards in February to get its superintendent search underway. Jeff Holmes is currently serving as interim superintendent of the district.

In other action, the board:
–directed Holmes to purchase a digital recording device for closed sessions;
–heard the board building and grounds committee will meet in February to discuss possible summer maintenance projects in the district; and
–was reminded the board would meet in special session on Jan. 24 to conduct a board self-evaluation.
