In an effort to help fight the growing obesity and chronic disease epidemic, Terri Rupki at the Kirby Medical Group has become certified as an ACE Health Coach.
With this certification Rupki can guide clients to be physically fit, as well as in mind, and spirit to achieve a balance, strength, agility, coordination, and endurance in all that they do.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States and rates remain high.
Adult obesity facts
More than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7 percent) and approximately 17 percent (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2―19 years are obese.
Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.
In 2008, medical costs associated with obesity were estimated at $147 billion; the medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) is a nonprofit organization committed to America’s health and wellbeing.
Founded in 1985. ACE is the largest nonprofit fitness certification, education and training organization in the world with nearly 50,000 certified professionals who hold more than 55,000 ACE certifications.
ACE health coaches
An ACE health coach is an expert who can guide and empower individuals. Health coaches are designed to address a change in the way people view overall health and motivate individuals to live happier healthier lives. Rupki will put an emphasis on fitness, nutrition and help change the behaviors that have kept their clients from losing weight and changing the way they eat.
