Brewpub to locate in Monticello

A brewpub and restaurant has announced intentions to locate in the soon-to-be-vacant Monticello United Methodist Church building.

City Community Development Director Callie McFarland told the city council Monday that the Monarch Brewing Company has applied for conditional use permits in anticipation of the business start.

McFarland said one CUP is needed in order to allow three primary uses for the property: manufacturing (brewery), a restaurant and a professional services company. Another permit will be needed to manufacture within a business zone.

In the works for about a year, she added that Monarch owner Matt Miller's “vision for the church is wonderful. This building is very limited and challenging when it comes to repurposing, and it also has a lot of history and emotions connected to it. Having worked with Matt through this process, I am confident he will put a high level of attention and care into maintaining it' integrity.”

McFarland said the move also marks a “transition” that is inevitable for small communities.

“We are evolving with the new definition of business in rural communities and I think the community will be surprised and supportive of what is coming,” she said.

The brewpub's website describes Monarch Brewing Company as “a nano brewery that is looking to settle down in Monticello, IL. We are homebrewers at heart and look to bring the passion and creativity that comes with this experience and create local crafted beers for the Monticello community and beyond.”

The use of the church for the project is contingent upon approval of the permits.

An opening date has not been announced.

The Methodist Church, currently located a block east of the downtown square at 212 S. Independence St., is moving to a new building on the east side of Monticello.
