Three popular running events in Monticello are teaming up to offer a Monticello Triple Crown award, which will be given to participants who cross the finish line in each of this year’s races.
“We wanted to reward people for participating in other races,” said Dean Hixson, who helps plan the April 6 Allerton Trails Half Marathon and 10K. “And since the Kirby Derby has a name linked with thoroughbred racing, it was too funny not to do.”
The other two races are the Kirby Medical Center-sponsored 5K and 10K run through downtown Monticello on May 11, and the Allerton Park Trail Run on Oct. 26, organized by the Second Wind Running Club.
“Hopefully it becomes a conversation starter and gets more to run our races,” said Hixon, an avid runner.
Those completing all three will receive a specially-created long-sleeved shirt or hoodie sweatshirt. The design is still being created, but Hixon said it would be “distinct and different.”
The apparel is being made possible by Kelly’s Accounting Service in Monticello, which is sponsoring the Triple Crown award.
“I was excited to hear about the Triple Crown idea and wanted to make sure Monticello embraced it,” said Kelly Finet, who recently completed the Walt Disney Half Marathon in Orlanda, Fla.
Those wanting to be eligible for the Triple Crown just need to run the first two races, then check the ‘Triple Crown” box when they register for the Allerton Park Trail Run Oct. 26.
