Derek Peterson, Associate Director of Park Operations at Allerton Park and Retreat Center, points out some of the features of the Sunken Garden at the park on Jan. 29. The tour was requested by area state Senator Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) to introduce new Illinois House member Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville) to what he called a "great wonder" of Central Illinois. Pictured here are (left to right) Dr. Bruce Banham, interim park director; Davis Chief of Staff Tim Butler, Davis, Rose and Peterson. The tour included a stroll through the formal gardens as well as through the Allerton Mansion. In addition, Banham filled the local legislators in on the long-range vision the University of Illinois has for the park and retreat center. The U of I has owned the 1,500 acre area since it was donated to the university by the Allerton family in 1946.
