Legislators tour Allerton Park

Freshman U.S. House member Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville) took a tour of the Allerton Park and Retreat Center on Jan. 29. They tour was arranged by area state senator Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet), who wanted to introduce Davis to what he called a “great wonder” of Central Illinois.

Dr. Bruce Banham, interim park director, filled the local legislators in on the long-range vision the University of Illinois has for the park and retreat center. The group, which also included Parkland staff Brenda Abbott and Derek Peterson as well as Davis staff member Tim Butler, strolled through the formal gardens and also toured the Allerton mansion.

The University of Illinois has owned the mansion and 1,500 acres around it since it was donated to it by the Allerton family in 1946.
