Democrat awaits winner of three-way GOP primary

Jen McMillin is waiting in the wings as three Republicans battle it out for their right to represent the party in the general election in November for the 101st Illinois House District.

As the only Democrat on the ballot, she will face the GOP victor.

Although that general election is about eight months away, McMillin has already been on the campaign trail.

“It’s going really well. I’ve made some great contacts and have had the pleasure to help some of my friends run in contested races,” said the Decatur resident and first time candidate for political office.

What is she hearing on the campaign trail?

“A lot of people are really dissatisfied with our governor and our president,” she said. “I think it’s the same issues like no budget, funding of public education, and concern of another budget impasse.

Unlike her Republican opponents, McMillin does not have a hardline stance on the term limits issue.”

“I truly believe we need to ensure everyone gets out and votes. That’s our term limit and we have to make people vote,” she said.

The candidate does, however, feel there should be limits on being in statehouse leadership roles.

“I really feel no matter how you feel about your party leadership, there should be a limit to how long they can serve. If for nothing else to train the next generation of leaders. We need to prep the leaders of tomorrow to bring them in to take on leadership roles,” said McMillin.

She is also realizing how long the campaign season is, with candidates announcing as early as last August.

She can’t wait for the election to finally be here.

“We’ve been waiting a while,” she added.
