The Illinois General Assembly decided not to play the role of Grinch, approving a measure that extends the candidate filing deadline for the April 9 municipal elections to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26.
The original deadline was Dec. 24, but lawmakers wanted to allow school districts and municipal governments to be able to be closed that day or close early for the Christmas holiday.
Candidates now have until the close of business day Dec. 26 to file for the April 9 election. The filing period begins Monday, Dec. 17.
Besides nominating petitions, a statement of economic interests, available from the county clerk’s office, is also required.
Since the filing deadline is extended, so is the date when objections to nominating petitions can be filed. That date is now Wednesday, Jan. 3.
