Piatt County's former emergency management agency director has been charged with official misconduct and theft, which prosecutors claimed occurred during his time with the EMA.
James E. Donaldson, 61, of Monticello, was officially charged on April 30 and arrested the next day after an investigation by the Illinois State Police District 10. He posted $1,000 and was freed from jail, and will appear in court on June 4.
Donaldson had been the ESDA/EMA director for several years before being relieved of his duties in May of 2018. At that point the agency was placed under the authority of the Piatt County Sheriff's Office.
Donaldson had appeared before the county board in December, asking to be allowed back in his office to collect personal belongings.
The charges are official misconduct, and theft of property worth more than $500 but less than $10,000, both class 3 felonies. Penalties range from probation up to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
