The Bement village board has scheduled a special meeting on Monday, Oct. 21 to hear testimony on whether to allow recreational marijuana sales in the village when it becomes legal in Illinois on Jan. 1.
“It’s a hot topic,” said Village Board President Pat Tieman. “We just thought it would be best to let the people speak about what their thoughts are.”
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the village hall.
Tieman said board members will be there mostly to listen, not to discuss the issue amongst themselves.
“This is more for people to come and give their opinion on how they feel and what they want,” he said.
Like many cities in the area, Bement has discussed the issue at its board meetings, but desired public input before a decision is made.
Tieman added that those wishing to speak will likely be limited to three minutes apiece, just like regular board meetings.
