Janet was born on December 27th, 1940 in Decatur, IL the daughter of Lewis and Evalyn Peck Merritt. She grew up in Cerro Gordo, IL the 3rd of 6 children and loved small town life. She married William Patrick Slattery (Pat or, later Bill of LaPlace, IL) after high school and soon had her first daughter at age 19. She worked as a hair color model and secretary while Pat attended the University of Illinois. They raised 5 children while living in the Chicago suburbs, Connecticut and New Jersey. In 1979, they divorced and Janet went back to Illinois with the children. She was a natural mother with a keen ability to love unconditionally.

Illinois was always her one and only home and where she felt the most at peace. She loved the prairie and the farmland and the people. In her later years, one of her favorite activities was eating at Casey’s and Judy’s Restaurant in Cerro Gordo and visiting with the customers. She was a beautiful presence, optimistic and outgoing with an open heart toward all.

Janet was a natural caregiver with a strong nurturing spirit and helped many when she worked as a CNA. However, the true joy and focus of her life were her five children and 6 grandchildren and her Cerro Gordo family (especially her sister Kathy Handley’s family). If you knew her, I’m sure you’ve heard her stories about all of them.

She is survived by her sisters, Karen Dunn and husband John of Avon, CO, Kathy Handley and husband Lorn of Cerro Gordo, IL and her brother Alan Merritt of Tucson, AZ. She suffered the loss of her sister in law Elaine Merritt and two of her sisters, Peggy Albert (survived by husband, Carrol) and Julie Snoke. We hope they are having a laugh together in heaven.

She is survived by her children, Mary Kathleen Slattery and husband Maurits Rol of Corrales, NM, Anne Elizabeth Oliver of St. Petersburg, FL, Margaret (Meg) Irene Becker and husband David of Flower Mound, TX, Thomas Patrick Slattery and wife, Kate Gorman of Charlotte, NC, Sarah Nannette Ulbrich and husband Tim of Omaha, Nebraska and her grandchildren Michael (20) and Kelly (17) Becker, Riley (11) and Lauren (8) Ulbrich, and Nate (10) and Anna (7) Slattery.
