Nadine McKee Funk

Nadine McKee Funk, 93, of Bement, IL., passed away at 1:37 P.M., on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at the Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. till 11:00 A.M., on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at the Bement United Methodist Church, 249 N. Piatt St., Bement, IL. Celebration of life services will follow the visitation on Saturday at the church. Private burial was held on Friday at the Bement Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Bement E.M.T.'s, Bement Ball Park Fund or Off The Fence Ministry, Bement.

Nadine was born on July 17, 1925, in Argenta, IL., a daughter of Harold A. and Myrtle A. Baker McKee. She married John Robert Funk on December 9, 1944 in Sherman, TX., and he passed away on June 28, 2014. Surviving are 2 daughters; Linda (John) Kirgan of Pekin, IL. and Judi (Dwight) Gregory of Bement, IL. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren; Karrie (Jeremy) Burdette of Bartonville, IL., Joshua Gregory and Jeremiah (Jamie) Gregory, both of Bement, IL. as well as 7 great-grandchildren; Wyatt and Kora Burdett, Trinity, Selah, Judah, Zion, and Mercy Gregory. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter; Dr. Janice Lynn Woodhouse, son-in-law; John Prombo, grandson; Kreg Kirgan, great-grandson; Justus John Gregory and son-in-law; Cliff Knapp.

Nadine was a resident of Bement, IL. for most of her life. She graduated Valedictorian of her class from Bement High School, attended US Army Nurse Cadet Program at Northwestern University Medical School, and married Army Air Corp Cadet Pilot John R. Funk on December 9th , 1944. After John's military service, the newlyweds relocated to the family farm outside of Bement, IL. Nadine and John were the loving parents of 3 daughters. In addition to being a mother and helping John to grow the family farm and start C.O. Funk and Son, an International Harvester dealership, she also did extensive community service work. Her service included work as PTA president, volunteering in 4-H and Girl Scouts, and directing the Bement PTA summer swimming program which served 280 youth in one year. She also served in various capacities at the Bement United Methodist church including Sunday School Superintendent, VBS Director, and Junior Worship Coordinator. She was named "Woman of the Year" for outstanding work with Bement youth in 1957.

Additional community service included extensive work on behalf of the Piatt County Mental Health Center, Piatt County Republican Women, which included escorting Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater at the convention in Chicago, was a charter member of the Bement Area Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the "Internet Bement" Board which brought higher speed internet to the Bement Schools and community, the American Legion Auxillary, Friends of the Bement Public Library, the Bement Community Council, the Support Our Schools group, Bement Athletic Boosters, the Piatt County Senior Citizen Transportation Program, was Commissioner of the Piatt County Housing Authority, and was a Bement Village Board Trustee.

Professionally, Nadine served as Piatt County Deputy Circuit Clerk from 1964-1972 and was a Piatt County Probation Officer from 1972-1975. From 1975-1980, she was appointed and served as chief probation officer and Director of Piatt County Probation and Court Services. From 1986-1994 she was Director of Piatt County Mental Health. During her tenure as Director, the current mental health center was constructed. She eventually retired from dedicated community service at age 85.

Nadine had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel with John in their Beechcraft Bonanza. She was John's co-pilot as they flew over 100,000 miles throughout North and South America. She later traveled to India, Nepal, England, China, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. In spite of medical challenges in the last few years, she still wanted an adventure and was hopeful to make it to Machu Pichu in Peru. She was married to John for over 69 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She lived a life of integrity and service to her family and community. She will be greatly missed by many.
