Nyle W. 'Hank' Norris

Nyle W. “Hank” Norris, 94, of Decatur, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at his home.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 3, at First United Methodist Church, Decatur, with visitation from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the church. Interment will be at the Monticello Township Cemetery, Monticello, IL. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or to donor’s choice. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home will be assisting the family with the arrangements.

Nyle was born August 16, 1924, in Monticello, IL, son of Charles W. and Daisy E. (Valentine) Norris. He married Evelyn M. Baird June 5, 1949, at the Monticello Methodist Church. They enjoyed nearly 70 years of marriage.

Nyle graduated from Monticello High School in 1942. While there, he acquired the nick name of “Hank” which stuck with him throughout his life.

While attending the University of Illinois in 1943, he was drafted into the Navy during WWII. After attending radio and radar training school, he was assigned to the U.S.S. Hector, an auxiliary repair ship (AR-7), stationed in the South Pacific. Upon discharge from the service in 1946, he continued his education and obtained a B.S. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois in 1949.

Nyle started working for Illinois Power Company at Decatur headquarters in 1949 and completed 40 years of service, retiring in 1989. During this time he enjoyed many picnics and functions with family, relatives and friends.

Nyle was active in Decatur Boys Baseball, scouting, camping, gardening, fishing and other sporting events. He was an avid University of Illinois fan. Nyle was a member and active in the First United Methodist Church since 1949. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Evelyn; children: Jane Ann (Mike) Walker of Columbia, MO, Mary Beth Norris of Champaign, IL, Charles William (Teri) Norris of Pearland, TX; nine grandchildren: Jennifer (Shawn) Moore of Collinsville, IL, Megan (Matt) Helfer of Decatur, IL, Brian and Kevin Murphy of Savoy, IL, Cara (Derek) Harmon of Hartsburg, MO, Callie (Jeff) Dickes of Columbia, MO, Crista (Tanner) Kruger of Ashland, MO, Brittani (Destry) Conoley of Pearland, TX and Danielle (Nick) Gable of League City, TX; nine great-grandchildren: Evangeline and Mercedes Gable, Colton and Sawyer Conoley, Mason, Morgan, and Mitchell Helfer, Levi Kruger, and Brinley Harmon; sister: Norma Glamack of New York; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Charles and Roberta Baird of New Lenox.

Nyle was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Max.
