Rowena (Elson) Drennan, 94, of Monticello, beloved Mother and Grandmother, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 21, 2019 at the Piatt County Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for 11 ½ years. Rowena far exceeded expectations for life expectancy, attributed to her positive attitude, the support of her loving family, her awesome network of friends, excellent care of the Piatt County Nursing Home, and outstanding Hospice support for the last three years.
Rowena was born July 16, 1925 in Neoga, IL the daughter of Edmund C. and Mabel (Thompson) Elson. She married William A. Drennan on November 14, 1948 in Neoga, IL. He passed away on November 15, 2012 in Monticello.
Rowena is survived by her daughters, Marsha (Bob) Hinthorn and Erin (Terry) Cody; grandchildren, Sarah (Scott) Luna, Laura Hinthorn, Dale (Amanda) Hinthorn, Jared (Heather Burton) Cody, Melissa (Ricky) Tate, Crystal (Tom Brenner) Basey; great grandchildren, Madeleine, Cameron, Aiden and Silas Luna, Catherine and Owen Hinthorn, Dylan, Lauren, Ethan, Liam, and Carter Tate, Brayden and Landen Basey, Baylee, Devon, and Abigail Brenner. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
Rowena was a film librarian and housewife. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello, a 50-year member of HCE, former 4-H leader, and former Newcomer Club. Rowena established an MS Support Group in 1991 and was an avid Bridge player.
Many people commented on Rowena’s ability to deal with physical adversity without complaining. She will be dearly missed by all, and we have learned so much from her lessons and examples she provided. She was a woman with a strong Christian faith, wonderful sense of humor, feisty and playing cards until the end of her earthly life.
