CERRO GORDO – The Cerro Gordo/Bement boys’ basketball team dropped a tough game to a much larger school Wednesday but battled back later in the week to win two Lincoln Prairie Conference matchups.

The Cerro Gordo-Bement boys basketball squad is off to a good start, winning two contests last week to run its season mark to 4-1, 2-0 in the Illini Prairie Conference.

The 8th grade boys (3-2) started the week by pulling out ahead of a tight competition with Clinton with a final score of 36-33. Evan Wassom led the team with twenty three points, and Tyler Blythe followed with five.

The Monticello boys’ basketball team picked up two road wins this past week to improve its record to 3-0 on the quickly sprung season.

Whether coming off a good year or a bad year, coaches will tell everyone before the season starts that each year has different players and last year’s record doesn’t matter.

A scorching 62 percent shooting percentage in the first half helped propel the Monticello High School boys' basketball team to a dominating 50-22 win over Clinton in the initial round of the Riverton regional on Monday night.

Monticello rallied from a 13-point deficit early in the fourth quarter to take a 1-point lead with three minutes remaining, but a couple mistakes and a travel call on the potential game-tying basket ended the Sages’ hopes in a 52-50 road loss to Paxton-Buckley-Loda on Friday.
